April 2021: Love Others

The Warm Up

When you were first starting out learning the game of golf, you likely had someone introduce you to the game. That introduction may have come from a parent, a friend, or a coach, yet whoever it came from became your golfing mentor.

On your first round of golf, you likely watched your golfing mentors every move looking to him or her as an example of how to hit the ball and interact on the course. Your golfing mentor introduced you to the new passion of golf while serving as your example for the game.

The Course

When it comes to our faith, Jesus is not only the one who introduces us to faith through His love and grace, but He also serves as the example of how to live the faith in the course of everyday life. Through the love that Jesus displayed toward us at the cross, we were introduced to a new life in and relationship with Him.

In seeking to live faithfully to that relationship, Jesus calls us to be people who display His love to others. John recounts Jesus’ words…

“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.”

(John 15:12 ESV)

We are to love those around us with a Jesus-like love. Jesus’ love was one that put others first to the point that He was willing to give His life on the cross for His people. Jesus put others before Himself and was willing to love even though it was costly to Him.

Jesus’ love that guides us into a relationship with Him becomes our example of what love should look like towards those around us.

Evaluating Your Score

When it comes to our lives, love is something that we cannot produce on our own. We need the same Jesus that serves as an example of true love to fill us with His love so that we can in turn extend that love to others.

In order to display this Jesus-like love, we need to make sure that we are connected daily to Jesus as our source. We need to be reminded that we were given others focused and costly love at the cross and that displaying the same to others is a gift and not a burden.

So today, how are you staying connected to Jesus as your source? Who is someone you can show Jesus-like love to today? How can you take a step back to put others before yourself?
