What’s the Relationship between SBS Golf and Brooke Gober Golf?

Brooke has played competitive golf since 2010, including many national tournaments with players from around the world. For example, the US Kids Golf World Championship (Pinehurst, NC) each year hosts over 1,300 kids from 40+ countries. More recently, Brooke competes on the AJGA tour with other highly ranked golfers from around the world. Brooke is directly responsible for helping to launch The Joshua Cup, and The Joshua Cup is responsible for launching The Impact Cup. Neither of these tournaments would be in existence today without the relationships established through Brooke’s junior golfing adventures!

  • Who Are We (Continued)

Who Are We? Step by Step Golf is a Christ-centered event-based ministry founded in 2009. The roots of the ministry naturally began as part of the original event, The Memorial Cup, which was first held in 2003. At Memorial Cup 2006, a small group of men gathered in prayer and fellowship before the Singles matches that morning. At Memorial Cup 2007, the Sunday prayer group met again, this time with a few more attendees, and then grew even larger at Memorial Cup 2008. It was at that time we realized the combination of golf and fellowship made sense, and the ministry was born.

Christ-centered: Jesus is the reason for the ministry. You can read more on our “Spiritual Beliefs” page.

Event-based: Our chosen “vehicle” for delivering our message is through the planning and execution of multi-day, highly competitive, match play golf tournaments taking place at a preferred destination.

Currently, Step by Step golf hosts three match play events each year. In addition to the those events, we have the opportunity to build relationships both nationally and internationally through Brooke Gober Golf. Here’s a visual overview of the ministry (each logo below is also a hyperlink to the event).

In 2013, Step by Step Golf was blessed to join forces with Crosswinds Foundation, led by Executive Director, Bob Waldrep. Crosswinds serves as our “parent” organization, mainly through prayer support. Crosswinds also assists with our financials and administrative support.

  • Spiritual Beliefs

We believe salvation comes through a personal relationship with Christ.....not church membership, not baptism, and not through a pastor or priest. Rather, Christ desperately wants to know us one-on-one. He also wants us to be connected with others in small groups where discipleship and life change can flourish.

    Salvation

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God. (Ephesians 2:8)
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." (John 14:6)
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. (Acts 4:12)

    Discipleship

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. (Proverbs 27:17)
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ. (Colossians 2:6-8)

  • Golf Beliefs

    • Reason 1

The game of golf has a governing body called the USGA. Regardless of the complexity of the rules, golf is meant to be played by the book.

    • Reason 2

Golf is the greatest game ever played because: 1) It is built on the Honor System 2) Your score is a true, honest, and direct assessment of your performance 3) Handicapping allows everyone to enjoy the game regardless of age or skill.

    • Reason 3

Walking is a fundamental component of the game.

    • Reason 4

Match Play is one of the most intense and competitive ways to play the game.

    • Reason 5

Bobby Jones is the greatest amateur athlete to ever live.

    • The Captain's Trophy

On paper, the 2018 Americans were a significant underdog, even though they had won four consecutive Memorial Cups. Despite being out-manned, and having a much “older” team, Captain Kight guided his American squad to a fifth consecutive MC victory. For his efforts, he will be the proud owner of THE actual Memorial Cup silver trophy, which he will proudly display in his home until we reconvene again next year.

    • The Larry Powell MVP Award

Larry Powell was a participant in MC 2011, and left an incredible mark on our group, both on and off the golf course. He was very influential in our fellowship meetings, and he was a force to be dealt with on the golf course. Six months later, Larry was diagnosed with cancer (December 2011), and went home to be with the Lord in April 2012. In honor of his legacy, Step by Step Golf has named the annual MVP award after Larry. The 2018 MVP is Marc Robillard, who happens to be the first ever 2-time MVP winner. Marc led his team by collecting 20 of a possible 25 points, and as always, Marc is an outstanding leader and teammate.

  • Joshua Cup Overview

What is Joshua Cup, and How Did it Get Its Name?

Joshua Cup is a 36-hole team match play event modeled after SBS Golf's headline event (Memorial Cup) pitting the AMERICANS vs the NATIONALS. Teams are randomly selected based on age and playing ability in order to ensure even pairings. From the beginning, Joshua Cup was a girls-only event, traveling to places such as Limestone Springs, Farmlinks Golf Club, Atlanta, and also the Alabama Gulf Coast. In 2019, the event transitioned to co-ed, immediately opening the door for expansion. The 2019 tournament will have a record number of participants (28), allowing us to play 14 vs 14.

We roll out the red carpet for the players and caddies. Team uniforms. Team captains. Captains trophy. First tee introductions. Live scoreboard updates on the course. For junior golfers across the southeast, this is a MUST PLAY event, for sure.

  • Participants - The Americans

    • Brooke Gober

Brooke was a participant in the inaugural Joshua Cup and looks forward to this competition every year due mainly to the team concept. Brooke is a 2-time state champion in the Alabama Jr. Girls Championship, and has finished in the Top 20 of the US Kids World Championship four times, with her best finish T-8 in 2013. Brooke posted rounds of 78-73-75 to finish 11th in this year’s World Championship. She is projected to enter the Top 30 of the Jr. Golf Scoreboard National Rankings for the class of 2022 within the next two months.

    • Neysa Dechachutinan

Neysa and her partner claimed the Joshua Cup in the inaugural year of 2013 by shooting an aggregate total of 7 under par over 27 holes. Neysa sealed the win with an 8-foot birdie putt on the 27th hole. Her golf accomplishments are wide ranging, as a multi-year participant in the US Kids World Championship, as well as summer tournaments in Thailand! Neysa was a National Finalist at the 2015 Drive, Chip, and Putt Championship at Augusta National, and finished 2nd in the Finals.

  • Participants - The Nationals

    • Kyndall Shamblin

Kyndall is a true world-class athlete and excels in both golf and basketball. She is known in her golfing circles as “Big Game Kyndall” because she performs her best in the biggest situations. Kyndall has finished in the Top 10 of the US Kids World Championship on multiple occasions, including a 2nd Place finish in 2012. She fired a final round 69 in this year’s World Championship to claim a 9th place finish. She is currently ranked 14th in the Jr. Golf Scoreboard National Rankings for the class of 2022.

    • Hannah Grace Nall

Hannah Grace is better known to her golfing friends as “Purple Thunder” partially due to her love of purple, but mainly due to her towering drives of 200+ yards. She is a 4-time participant in the US Kids World Championship, and has many championship titles under her belt including Starburst and multiple AAJGT wins. HG was literally one shot away from reaching the Finals of the inaugural Drive, Chip, and Putt at Augusta National in 2014, all with a broken arm! The Captain's Trophy

Each year in the Memorial Cup and the Joshua Cup, the American Team competes against the Nationals Team in a 3-day match play tournament. The captain of the winning team is presented with our Captain's Trophy, and will have the honor of taking the trophy home for the coming year. As you can see in the picture, the winning team each year also earns a silver plate which is added to the trophy. Please visit our "History" page to see a list of previous winning captains. In 2015, the Americans will be captained by Todd Gober, while the Nationals will be captained by Josh Elam.

    The Larry Powell MVP Award

For each of our match play events, the tournament committee of Step by Step Golf chooses the "Most Outstanding Player" award. The award is presented to the most deserving player at the Champions Luncheon immediately following the conclusion of play. Since 2012, this award has been named after Larry Powell. Larry was a participant in Memorial Cup 2011 and won the MOP award himself that year. He also contributed significantly to the fellowship activities during the weekend events and provided great advice and personal testimony to the group. In January of 2012, only six months after participating in MC 2011, Larry was diagnosed with cancer and then passed away on May 22, 2012. He never stopped saying "God is Good", and he will be honored forever as the namesake of our MOP award.

  • The Larry Powell MVP Award

    • The Trophy

Larry Powell was a participant in the 2011 Memorial Cup held at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, FL. Larry played great, but more importantly he had a tremendous impact on the fellowship activities that year. Larry had been through a recent period of tremendous spiritual growth and he was able to impart much of his enthusiasm to our group. In late 2011, only six months after participating in Memorial Cup, Larry was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. He passed a few months later. Because of the impact he made on our ministry, both on and off the golf course, we began recognizing a tournament MVP at the 2012 Memorial Cup. The tradition has continued each year with the Memorial Cup, and it is our privilege to give this same award in his honor to the MVP of the Joshua Cup each year.

  • Impact Cup Overview

The Impact Cup is a 36-hole match play tournament specifically for junior boys. Similar to the other two SBS Golf events, The Impact Cup combines a variety of playing formats (best ball, alternate shot, total shamble), with Christ-centered fellowship. For additional information, please visit the Joshua Cup pages, as the Impact Cup will be very similar.

Tournament officials with Step by Step Golf are currently in the planning and development stages of the inaugural Impact Cup. More details, including dates and locations, will be provided once available (at least three months in advance of the tournament dates).

The video links below are from the fellowship meeting at Memorial Cup 2013. This year, we had three participants share heartfelt and emotional stories based on how God was working in their lives over the past year or two. Please take time to watch each of these, and let God speak to you through these men.

  • Upcoming Men's Fellowships

Over the years, participants in both the Memorial Cup and the Joshua Cup have requested that we continue hosting fellowship activities so that everyone can remain in contact in the days and months following the tournament week. We're fortunate to have participants from Texas, Florida, Kentucky, and all parts in between, so gathering together as a group during the year is a challenge. We have been able to keep everyone together through the form of conference calls, which is a format we've used especially in the months leading up to the tournament week. If you are an active participant in either the Memorial Cup or the Joshua Cup, you will receive an invitation from your Tournament Director regarding the dates and times of your conference calls. All calls will be recorded and added to the website under the "Archived Fellowships" link.

  • Spirit Agreement

The SBS Golf Board of Directors asks all participants, caddies, and tournament officials to read and comply with the following statements. These statements reflect the purpose and the spirit of SBS Golf events. As you know, a tremendous amount of time and money is spent every year planning these events, and, they are highly competitive, which means your actions during the event can and will have an impact on your teammates, other participants, and potentially the outcome of the tournament.

    • SBS Golf will host a highly competitive match play tournament, combined with thought-provoking Christian fellowship. I will be a supportive participant in all areas.

    • I will study the schedule of activities so that I'm prepared to arrive at the event on time, remain onsite through its conclusion, and be in the right place at the right time throughout the event (meetings, meals, tee times, fellowships, etc...)

    • I understand that this is a team event and my cancellation or no show could have a widespread impact on many other people. January 1st serves as the annual cancellation deadline for all Memorial Cup participants, meaning, there is no guarantee that any monies can be refunded after that date. Refunds for Memorial Cup, after 1/1, will be partially dependent on finding an equitable replacement, as well as the amount of money the replacement is willing to pay. Refunds for the Joshua Cup will fall under the guidelines set forth by SS Jr. Golf Classics.

  • Spirit Agreement (Continued)

    • I will familiarize myself with the rules of golf, to the best of my ability, and will give my best effort to play by the rules. In the event of a rules question, violation, or discrepancy, I will help resolve the conflict in accordance with the spirit of this event, and will rely on my team captain the tournament officials to assist.

    • I am willingly choosing to participate in a Christ-centered event where we will glorify and praise His name through prayer and fellowship.

    • I will submit requested documentation and payments according to the deadlines provided (payments, pictures, bios, scoring info, etc...).
